Mission and Goals
The Landessaatzuchtanstalt (LSA, State Plant Breeding Institute), founded in 1905 on the initiative of C. Fruwirth, is a university institution for research and development (R&D) in the field of plant breeding. The LSA's tasks are based on the societal need for resource-conserving, environmentally friendly and market-oriented agricultural plant production.
Priority objectives are:
- sustainable genetic resistance to pests and diseases
- improved biological and technological product quality
- high efficiency of nutrient uptake and use
- tolerance to abiotic stresses
To achieve these goals, the LSA works in the following areas:
- development and optimisation of breeding methods
- creation of genetically improved breeding material, if necessary up to variety level
- analysing the genetic potential of new plant species for production alternatives
- development and testing of new biological techniques and more efficient testing and research methods
- to conserve, evaluate and use plant genetic resources for breeding
