Landessaatzuchtanstalt (720)

Mission and Goals

The Landessaatzuchtanstalt (LSA, State Plant Breeding Institute), founded in 1905 on the initiative of C. Fruwirth, is a university institution for research and development (R&D) in the field of plant breeding. The LSA's tasks are based on the societal need for resource-conserving, environmentally friendly and market-oriented agricultural plant production.

Priority objectives are:

  • sustainable genetic resistance to pests and diseases
  • improved biological and technological product quality
  • high efficiency of nutrient uptake and use
  • tolerance to abiotic stresses

To achieve these goals, the LSA works in the following areas:

  • development and optimisation of breeding methods
  • creation of genetically improved breeding material, if necessary up to variety level
  • analysing the genetic potential of new plant species for production alternatives
  • development and testing of new biological techniques and more efficient testing and research methods
  • to conserve, evaluate and use plant genetic resources for breeding
