Field and expert days 2026 - warm welcome to Hohenheim

This summer, come to field days and expert events to exchange ideas, visit trials and talk with our breeding and research teams.

  1. Lecture (6:00–6:30 p.m.): Benefits of commercial compost from composting facilities for organic farms. Speaker: Erhard Gapp (Demeter Beratung e.V.)
  2. Guided tour (6:30–7:00 p.m.): Field trials of the “RoggenPop” organic project. The project aims to improve population breeding in rye for organic farming through the use of modern selection methods. Presentation of the trials: Marvin Rose and Prof. Dr. Thomas Miedaner (University of Hohenheim, State Plant Breeding Institute)
  3. Guided tour (7:00–10:00 p.m.): Organic variety trials of the state Baden-Württemberg
  4. Closing reception and discussion in the barn (starting at 10:00 p.m.)

Public Notice for the Supply of Breeding Material 2025

Based on the guidelines of the University of Hohenheim for transferring plant varieties, genetic components for plant varieties, and other breeding material of 05.07.2023 (download), the State Plant Breeding Institute of the University of Hohenheim will offer breeding material for several plant species after the 2025 harvest. The plant species available include:

  • Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum)
  • Mexican Chia (Salvia hispanica L.)
  • Soybean (Glycine max)
  • Winter spelt (Triticum aestivum ssp. spelta)
  • Durum wheat (Triticum durum)
  • Winter einkorn (Triticum monococcum)
  • Winter emmer (Triticum dicoccum)
  • Winter triticale (x Triticosecale Wittmack)
  • Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum ssp. aestivum), prebreeding material

 

Expressions of interest should be submitted in writing by August 1, 2025, to:

Test results will be sent to interested parties after the harvest. It is possible to inspect the breeding material during the growing season in Hohenheim or Willstätt.

Commercial rights to the Juana chia variety

The University of Hohenheim has exclusively transferred the commercial rights to use the variety of Chia (Mexican Chia, Salvia hispanica L.) with the variety name "Juana" (Bundessortenamt Kenn-Nr. SAH 1) to Südwestdeutsche Saatzucht GmbH & Co. KG  exclusively. If you are interested, please enquire here: chia@suedwestsaat.de
