In the Gene Bank project, the implementation of a pre-breeding program in soft wheat is funded until 2025. This project is an extension in which the breeding lines will be tested for two years at four organically managed sites in parallel with conventional locations. In addition, baking trials and the analysis of components (such as dietary fiber, minerals, and free asparagine) will be conducted on the breeding lines under both cultivation systems. The aim is to determine the extent of correlation between the systems for various traits in this genetically diverse material. Based on a possible project extension, the ultimate goal is to develop a long-term, optimized breeding program for efficient pre-breeding in both conventional and organic farming systems. However, funding for this is still pending.
