The overarching aim of the project is to work with producers, processors and retailers along the value chain to tap into the cultivation potential of chickpeas, which have not been widely cultivated in Baden-Württemberg to date. The aim is to increase the area under cultivation and the market supply of regionally produced protein-rich plant products and open up new market potential. With the involvement of accompanying scientific research, cultivation systems for chickpeas are being developed together with agricultural pilot farms in Baden-Württemberg. To this end, on-farm trials are being carried out on farms in different pedoclimatic locations as well as exact scientific trials at the University of Hohenheim and specific issues such as variety selection, sowing date, sowing strength, rhizobia inoculation, ripening, weed and disease management are being addressed. The focus of the work at the LSA is the development of a speed-breeding protocol for chickpeas. To this end, studies are being carried out with different LED types and lighting cycles. This will form the basis for a breeding program for chickpeas.
