Tigist Shiferaw Tadesse is a doctoral candidate at the State Plant Breeding Institute, specializing in plant breeding with a focus on barley. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Plant Science and completed her Master’s degree in Plant Breeding. She has gained extensive experience through internships in cereal breeding methodology, agricultural data analysis and phenomic prediction with leading German breeding companies. Additionally, she has worked on conventional barley breeding for Ethiopian agro- ecology at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR). Her research interests are centered on advancing barley breeding, particularly through conventional pre-breeding activities, multi-location trial evaluations, and predicting genotype performance for future planting seasons. Currently, Tigist is working on her Ph.D. project titled "Science for Food Security: ‘Orphan Crop’ Barley Goes High-Tech for Ethiopia," funded by KWS and GFPI.
This project explores how scientific advancements in plant breeding can enhance biodiversity and food security in Ethiopia, where barley plays a vital role in the agricultural sector. By applying cutting-edge breeding technologies, the project seeks to increase barley’s productivity and resilience, ultimately contributing to sustainable agriculture in the region.
